Measure safely from accessible ground. Do not approach a visibly unstable wall to obtain dimensions.
How this is calculated
Length in metres multiplied by average visible height in metres gives an approximate rectangular wall-face area in square metres. For example, 10 metres multiplied by 1.2 metres is 12 square metres. This is ordinary area arithmetic, with no market rate, benchmark coefficient or price multiplier.
The calculation assumption treats the section as a rectangle represented by its average height. It excludes buried parts, foundations, returns, steps, waste, drainage, excavation and structural loads. It does not determine sleeper quantities, post spacing, engineering suitability or construction cost.
For a wall that changes height substantially, calculate separate sections and add their areas. Keep the individual lengths and heights as well as the total; the tallest part and the surroundings may be more important to the construction discussion than the combined number.
Use the result to describe an enquiry. The contractor needs reliable site measurements and any necessary professional design before specifying the work. Check Ipswich City Council building guidance for the approval process; the calculator does not establish an exemption.
What the area does not tell the contractor
Two walls with equal visible area can be very different jobs. One may be beside an open work area, while another is behind a house with a narrow entry. Nearby vehicles, buildings, fences and other retained levels can affect the design. Removal of an old wall and the destination for drainage also need to be described.
